Buy new chainrings or new crankset? And why?Fez

I need new Shimano 9 speed 53/39 double chainrings. I keep hearing from fellow cyclists that for what 2 chainrings cost, you could purchase an entire crankset.

1) Is this true? I have looked around and for Dura Ace or Ultegra, the complete crankset is always at least $50 more than the 2 rings.

2) OK, I can see having one set of spare crankarms. But after that, why spend the extra money on the complete crankset? Cranks almost never need replacement, barring cosmetic wear, manuf defect, or bike accident.

seems like you have answered your own question. Why buy the crankset if you can find the rings cheap enough. Another option is buy the crankset right and possibly sell the arms.
