I just use the clicking noise in my BB...TFerguson

The louder the click, the higher the power. Since I can't seem to get rid of it, I'm just calling it an undocumented feature.

could it be the way the bottom bracket is mounted in the frame? I had a ticking noise which took several attempts to find- it turned out that one face of the BB of the frame had not been machined enough (or something like that). They re faced (less than 0.3mm) and tapped it. no problems since. It had the LBS stumped for a while though.

The hac4 simply estimates power based on elevation change, speed, body weight, etc. It makes TONS of assumptions about frontal area, and ccannot correct for drafting, wind, etc. I wouldn't buy one.
Very little is necessary.Kerry Irons

Eddy trained without a power meter, and after 20 odd years, Boardman beat his hour record by not very many meters despite all the advanced training techniques and a demonstrably more aero bike. OTOH, power meters do improve training for those at the elite level. If you are losing races by a little bit each time, effective use of a power meter in training may take you to the next step in race performance. If you are pack fodder, power meter training won't precipitate a miracle.

A power meter won't precipitate a miracle but a well thought out structured training program might and a power meter will make it a lot easier to design and carry out that program.
Chris Boardman was no Eddy MerckxTJeanloz

The comparison isn't very apt. Boardman was not an elite pro - probably never in the top ten riders, and picked his time trials to win. Merckx was head-and-shoulders above every cyclist of his generation. I can't really think of a modern equivilent, but Boardman isn't even close on the talent scale - and still beat him in the hour.

Power Meters - I like them

Are they necessary - no

Best meter for the buck - IMO PowerTap by Graber

Hac4 - Not a real power meter and not worth the money if that's what you'd be buying it for.
