Depends on the RD and it's wrap capacity.Your example has 31 teeth,and current SC shimanos are speced at 29,and campy at 27. Specs are usually somewhat conservative.Worst case,you may not be able to use some of the small cogs when in the small ring,and that all assumes the derailer you have will shift the 30,which a shimano probably will.

i just went ahead and bought a GS caged 105 RD. $40 dollars is a lot cheaper then the worst case senario if the RD was to be sucked into the rear wheel

No; mcuh better off getting mid or large.
