threads of crank (pedal) are damaged(6 posts)

threads of crank (pedal) are damagedDerrick VL
Oct 27, 2003 6:19 AM
Because the Shimano-pedal was not fully tight on my crank (Shimano DA), the threads of my right crank are 1/3 damaged (outer part).
Now, I cannot anymore mount the pedals.
Replacing the crank is an expensive solution...

Is there a way to 'recut' the threads? I asked in a shop, but it seems to be an abnormal thread, so ordinary cutters don't work.

The threading should be a standard 9/16". A good shop should have a tap this size as part of their regular tools. You could clean up the threads by starting the tap from the backside and go all the way through. Once this is done the pedal spindle should be able to thread in normally. If the threads are beyond repair, they do make pedal thread inserts. It starts with a tool that reams out the original thread, and then taps it for the steel insert. After that the insert, like a helicoil, is threaded in, and then you can install your pedal.
Yup, I've worked in a good shop...zero85ZEN

...and have seen both proceedures, described in the preceeding post, done with sucess. You shouldn't have to trash your crank it can be repaired but you will have to find a knowledgable and competent mechanic to fix it for you.

Have you tried screwing in the pedal from the other side? Drive it through and you should be able to properly thread it in again.

That could work but there are a few things to consider:

first: the threaded part of the spindle is probably not long enough to reach the very first few damaged threads(if you look at most pedals, they stop a little before the end of the threads in the crank)

Second: you may damage the threads on your pedal (which may cost even you more)

Your idea is good in a pinch, on the road, or with cheaper components, but I would have a shop check it out.

True, after my post I decided to check out my bike and saw the threads probably weren't long enough.
