from my understanding, the 55t is mainly used for tt/tri's when combined with 650 wheels, and holds an equivalant ratio to 53t with 700c wheels.

however, there are road race scenarios where the larger ring could prove advantageous with 700c wheels .

does the 55t transition smooth enough with the standard 39t smaller ring, or does the 55 need to be paired with ,let's say.. a 42t?

also, anyone know how/when the 53/39 ring gear became standardized ?

Why bother? I just removed the Ultgera 53/39, and replaced it with a Sugino 46/34 tooth crank set. That & the 11 - 34 cassette I put on the rear of my Fuji team is great for climbing the hills in the San Fransisco Bay Area. I don't race so I really never used the factory combo, even on steep downhills. On the level not many folks can use such big gears.
