How much do my wheels weigh?(6 posts)

How much do my wheels weigh?Matno

I know they're no lightweight wheels, but I can't seem to find anything similar to compare online. I have Mavic MA3 rims with Ultegra hubs (6500 series) laced 3-cross with 14/15 gauge DT spokes. Anyone have any idea what these weigh? The numbers I'm coming up with make them significantly heavier than my Bontrager MTB wheelset (not a lightweight wheelset either), which I can easily tell by hand isn't true...

Also, if anyone happens to know, what is the approximate weight of my 56cm CAAD4 Cannondale frame? Thanks.

They're 32 spoke wheels front and rear. Here's what I think they should weigh according to mfgrs' websites:
Front hub - 198g
Rear hub - 410g
Rims - 470g each
Spokes - 210g per wheel, including brass nipples (I'm more or less totally guessing on the spokes. I have no idea if that's the correct number).

The total that gives me is 1968 grams. Seems awfully heavy considering that my MTB wheels (Bontrager Race Modified Disc) are 1790 grams (claimed weight). The MTB wheels feel much heavier to me (and yes, that's without cassette, tires, or disc rotor). They're definitely heavier than the rim-brake wheels I used to have. I realize that the 700c rims are slightly bigger, but the discrepancy is confusing (and bugging) me here. Perhaps Bontrager's stated weight is WAY off?
Don't have a MA3, but for the rest...TFerguson

6500 Front hub= 138 gr QR= 58 gr
6500 Rear hub= 346 gr QR= 63 gr
16 296mm spokes= 97 gr (You should have 32@298,16@297,16@295)
16 Brass nipples= 16 gr (32 Al nipples=9 gr)

I make it 1997 gr. I beleive that only Campy and Shimano lists weights with QRs. Rim tape doesn't weigh much.

buy a gram scale

the cannondale frame may be listed at under listings - frames

I actually have a gram scale. I'm just too lazy to take everything apart just to check! Maybe I'll just guess by subtracting what my tires and tubes should weigh...

I got a pretty good guess as to the frame weight from Cannondale's website. They don't actually list the weight of the CAAD4, but they say it's almost 300g more than the CAAD5 (including headset and fork). I know how much my fork and headset weigh, so that's close enough. My guess is around 1450g for a 56cm frame.

Spokes are confusing me though. Weight weenies doesn't have my spoke sizes listed, and none of their listings for spokes are the same, so it's hard to compare.

the gram scale is the only way to go. there are too many variables between components to figure it out from a webpage
