Any Tips, Tricks, Suggestions for truing Shimano 7701 wheelsGeoCyclist

After 3000 km my back wheel finally went out of true today. Unfortunately, this happened with a big pop while climbing a hill. There are no broken spokes, but the wheel is so far out of true it touches the brake pads. The mechanic at my LBS won't attempt truing the wheel; as he hasn't had any success with previous attempts on the 16 spoke Shimano wheels, and he recommends sending the wheel to Shimano for truing. I have a good Park truing stand, but limited experience with my MTB wheels. I cant' find any info on truing the 7701's and was wondering if anyone has trued this type of wheel. Would appreciate any info or suggestions that anyone has!!!

I just ordered a set of Mavic Open Pro wheels as back-up wheels. I should have my Mavic's on Wednesday, so I'll be riding my Mavic wheels until I can sort out my Shimanos.

First, determine what caused the wheel to go out of true with that loud "pop!" The stress of climbing hard may have stripped the threads in a nipple, or caused one of the little washers that the spokes fit into at the rim to move out of it's correct position. It everything's OK, you should relieve the tension on all of the spokes, then gradually bring up the spoke tension to true the wheel and bring the spokes to equal tension. As with any wheel with few spokes, you can't just tighten up one or two spokes to pull the rim back into true, you need to treat the entire wheel assembly as a whole. Shimano doesn't list the proper tensoin for the 7701 wheel on their web site, but the tension for the 7700 rear is 92-118 in. lbs for the drive side and 86-103 in.lbs for the non-drive side. I don't know exactly what is the difference between the 7700 and the 7701 wheelset. Hope this helps!

I don't have a spoke tension gauge. This is another question that I will post a new topic for today.

If you don't have a spoke tension gauge, try this: lay the wheel on a bench with with no tire installed. Using a plain old ruler to measure the deflection, press on one of the spokeswith your finger hard enough to deflect it about 1/4 inch at the center of the spoke's span between the hub and the rim. Do this on several spokes, to get the feel of how tensioned they are. Your finger will probably have a fairly accurate memory! Another trick is to pluck the spokes with a fingernail and remember the sound that they make. If you don't have a good memory for tones, use a little tape recorder to remember for you. You'll get used to it in no time. And all the while, save up the dollars for a tension gauge. I'ts worth it's weight in unbroken spokes!
