Anyone have issues with the Hutchinson Carbon Comps?(10 posts)

Anyone have issues with the Hutchinson Carbon Comps?DIRT BOY

My tires after 3 months are showing signs of Dry Rot on the sidewall and the rear tire has developed a very small hole/puncture in the sidewall.

The LBS said this happens a lot with these tires. Could it just be the Florida heat? I love their MTB tires, but LBS said their road tires stink. They have had 6 Postal version tires come back with similar problems.

Thanks!

I've had good luck, but I appear to be in the minority.TNSquared

About every three months, Performance puts their "exclusive" carbon comps (red stripes with black tread and sidewalls) on for $19.99 each. Every time they do that, I buy two. Even if they were crappy, that's a hard price to beat.

In my case, though, they've been great tires. Only one flat, which was a puncture from a piece of glass that would have gone through anything. The set on my bike right now has 2,500 miles and no unexpected wear. The rear tire is slightly squared off, but otherwise both tires look fine - good amount of tread left and no cuts or problems with the sidewalls. They are a little hard compared to the Vittoria's that I've used before, but I like that feel.

I've heard and read alot of negative feedback on the carbon comps, so I don't know why I've been this lucky so far. I guess truly, YMMV.

to begin with,i love these tires. they are reasonably light, roll fast and grippy in corners and for $19.99 at Performance, they are the bomb. however, from my type of riding, i got plenty a number of cuts and flats. my first pair, i crashed them at a local twilights. severe damaged sidewall on my rear tire but i was able to finish the race besides my bended rear wheel. my second and third set, i wore them out from races and got cutS on it. a little pissed but besides the durabllity issue, hutchinson designed them to be race tires. so i learn my lessons and save them for races. use michelin hi-lite prestige for trainng and so on.

Total mileage from the set, about 45miles.

Ride 1, 2x7mile commute, no problems.

Ride 2, 1x7 mile commute. Return home was about 3 miles and a huge cut from glass. I've run over glass like this many times and sometimes flatted, but never cut clean through. Superglued and duct-tape booted the cut even though that's supposed to be temporary.

Ride 3, 1 mile. I scuffed a curb with the rear and it demolished the side wall. Set was ruined.

OK, I know glass can cut any tire, but by Vrdenstein Fortezzas can ride through anything. No flats yet with these in months. Quite remarkable. The curb grazing is a toss up. Some tires would probably have bounced off unscathed, but the Hutch's were ruined.

Also, they were sloppy going on the bead. Almost like they were too big.

I'll never buy again even if they are inexpensive.

I've ridden the Vittoria Rubino Pro's and now the Hutchinson Carbon Comps. The Vittorias were excellent - light, with excellent grip, and lasted about 2500 NYC miles. The kevar really keeps them together.
The Hutchinsons are also light with grip, but have ZERO durability. I crashed and slightly scraped the sidewall, this messed up the whole tire - had to be replaced. They also cut very easily.

www.pricepoint.com is selling the Vittorias (2) for $70
Thanks everyone..My LBS recommended the Vittoria Rubino Pro'sFL_Rider

I got them and hope to ride on Friday to test them out.
Those Carbon Comps are a great buy wholesale, but even at that price it's not worth it. I loved the feel and handling.

Oh well..The Vittoria's are Italian anyways!! :-)

Agree with LBS, I have have one pair and they wore quickly. Easily the most unimpressive tire I have ever ridden.

My pair is on my "go fast wheels" and haven't had any problems yet.

then again, I train on Michelin Prestiges most of the time.
