|OK here's the scoop. I get a "slapping" noise I can't seem to figure out. It sounds kind of like the noise you can make when you flick your STI levers:
1) pedaling or coasting makes no difference
2) sitting or standing makes no difference
3) always hear it when I hit big expansion joint or similar bump in the road
4) still hear it while holding the STI levers so they can't move
5) sounds like it's coming from headset area (for what it's worth)
I've heard the same noise before with a loose headset, but I've checked and rechecked the headset and it's adjusted correctly and rotates smoothly. I've checked to see if cable housings are slapping the frame anywhere, but this doesn't appear to be the case.
Can any one shed any light on this one?

|Is it your chain slapping against your chain stay?
Do you have a bike bag or some other accessory (frame pump) that might be loose?
Try to go over the bike while it is stationary. Often it is hard to determine the cause while riding, unless it is something obvious.
Check the tightness of ALL bolts. All threads of fasteners should be lubed, as well as the points of contact.
Other than that, maybe something is broken, such as a spoke.
Go over everything with a fine tooth comb, in good light. Check everything separately: Spin the wheels, etc.
Hope that helps.

|Another possibility is the rims themselves. I've had problems in the past with weld tabs coming loose and having to use a tiny bit of glue to keep them from rattling or clacking on big bumps. *shrug*|| |
