A little puzzled about a steerer tube race.the bull

I went to press on a 1" used race on the steel fork I got.
The thing is there is was not any pressing to be done.
The race that I hit off was tight.
The other race that was loose had about 1mm of play.
Yes, both steerers are 1".
Do older steel forks have different size base for races?
I dont think they do.
The race that fits tight is off a XT Deore headset.
The one that was loose is made by Specalized.
There were two different fork crown race diameters, for 1" forksMR_GRUMPY

One was used on japanese bikes, and the other was on all others. They were somewhere around 26.0mm and 26.4mm ??
I can't remember which was which. The headset cups will work with either crown race. Check out the Sheldon Brown web site for more exact info.
One of your races might have been the Japanese standard. Just buy the correct crown race from your shop, and the HS will work.
Thanks that seems right!the bull

The Japanese must be the 26.4mm.
So I take it the standard today is 26mm?
Not that it matters but...Spoke Wrench

actually, the JIS standard is 27.0mm and the "other" standard is 26.4mm. You'll mainly find 27.0 crown races on lower priced bikes.
Correction: There are three sizesMR_GRUMPY

Here's the info..... Standard is called ISO. It has a 26.4mm crown race with a 30.2 dia cup. Next is the Japanese standard that you don't see much anymore. (Like French threads)They have a 27.0 crown race, with a 30.0mm dia. cup.
Last is the BMX 1" standard. It has a 26.4 crown race, BUT it takes a 32.7mm cup.
I guess that you can't exchange cups afterall, but the 27.0 fork can be converted to the 26.4 race, if your shop has the proper crown race cutter. Most shops don't carry something like this, unless they have been in business a long time.
So if I buy a King what do I get? nmthe bull
