If if "simple green" my chain, hose it off, let it air dry..then surface rust always appears. I just lube and ride it. If that's the extent of the rust, then don't worry about it.

If its' a chain that's been sitting around for months, covered in light rust - but still has lube on it, its' probably OK. But with most chains costing $10-15 (unless its a Campy 10 chain), then why risk it? Buy a new chain if you care about your cassette.
