Trek OCLV Bottom Bracket Washer question(5 posts)

Trek OCLV Bottom Bracket Washer questionmarkkar

I was at the bike shop at lunch and noticed that on the drive side of the bottom bracket there is big thin washer between the frame and the bottom bracket lock ring. Anybody know what that is for? Does that come with the frame? These bikes had Ultegra. I am building one up soon with Dura Ace triple and the bottom bracket I got doesn't have that big washer. Does it really matter anyway? Thanks

The washer isn't there to be a spacer - it sticks up above the BB shell, so that when you drop your chain on the inside, it doesn't damage the carbon. Before they came up with this solution, there were problems with damage to the integrity of the BB area because of repeated chain dropping (which would chip a little bit of carbon away each time, until there was a problem).

I bought a 5500 frameset and the washer came with the frame.
One has, the other doesn'tAtombomber

There is no difference in performance with or without the washer, but as said, it doesn't hurt to help protect the carbon at the BB. It should have come with the frame when new. My first bike I got as a frame only second hand and I guess the previous owner saved the washer for himself.
