Replace Ultegra Double with Triple...(6 posts)

Replace Ultegra Double with Triple...cet
Aug 19, 2003 8:35 AM
I have a 9 speed Ultegra '03 double crankset and I want to replace it with a triple. Do I need to replace the BB, shifters and derailers also? Thanks for your help.

You need to replace: Crank, BB, F and R der. If you have ultegra shifters, you don't need new ones.

Add a couple links to the chain, or new longer chain.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you need a longer chain. Even though the der has a longer cage, the big-big + 1 link criteria still applies. So I guess it depends if you're going to a bigger big chainring or not. Right?

Not unless he is also using a bigger rear cog. And,since chains are sized different ways, even that is not always a given.

I just bought a 2003 5200 last weekend (brand new) and want to swap out for a double. I'll trade you my triple crank, and deraillers for yours. My crank is 170mm Octalink. 52/42/30. I've done one 20 mile ride. Email me!!Luv2ridemtb@msn.com
