Want better climbing gearing(4 posts)

Want better climbing gearingjrm

I have a 02' 105 drivetrain. using the harris bicycles gear inch calculator i have two options here, of which either will require a new rear derailler with a longer cage. The 1st is using a 8 spd 11-30 cassette. Can i use this with with 02' 105? Or can i use a MTB 12-32 cassette? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

John

Neither necessarily requires a longer cage, because cage length is primarily about wrap capacity. Your 105 will probably handle a 30, and sometimes a 32 depending on application. Depending the wrap capacity you need you could also consider a SC mtb RD if you 105 needs to be changed out.
You can't use 8 speedLC

Your STI shifter won't do 8 speed.

Best bet it to get the 12-32 9 speed Cassette and a MTB derailleur.

You can buy the parts that you need from Harris Cyclery and put together a 9-speed 13-28, 13-29, 14-30, or whatever. I don't like using the mountain cassettes because the ratio jumps are too bid with each shift.
