Campy Cassette with Ultegra Drivetrain?(10 posts)

Campy Cassette with Ultegra Drivetrain?Capital Crescent
Aug 14, 2003 12:40 PM
9spd Ultegra drivetrain. Inherited nice wheelset with Campy hubs. Can I throw a 9sp campy cassette on, adjust the der, and run it with my ultegra drivetrain? I've read the posts re: the opposite....what problems will I see?

Thanks
No, you cannot. Different cassette spacing.Zonic Man

Shimano's not compatible with campy and vice versa.

How bad would it be? Sheldon Brown suggests that it may be possible...would it be awful?

If you wish to use a cassette/hub with the same number of sprocket (or fewer) with a derailer/shifter of a different system, you may need to replace some of the spacers to change the spacing of the cassette. Modern indexing systems are so forgiving, however, that many theoretically incompatible combinations actually work fairly well.
In particular, for reasons that are not quite clear, 9-speed hubs/cassettes seem to work pretty well with the opposite 9-speed derailer/shifter brand.

Contrary to some people's beliefs, mixing and matching 9 speed cassettes and drivetrains is often perfectly O.K. It depends on a few things, but it is definitely worth trying - you may find that it shifts just as well, if not better, than the pure drivetrain.
We've had some issues in the shop.Zonic Man

Some of the gears work great, then you get into the bigger rear cogs and under load the chain starts skipping. Just my experience is all.
Depends on the bike...TJeanloz

Bikes with shorter chainstays are more likely to have a problem. Litespeed Ultimates almost never work perfectly. Touring bikes almost never know the difference.

A lot of people only have one data point to work with, and if that point is an Ultimate (or similar), they shout from every treetop that it doesn't work, while if it was a touring bike, they are as resolute that it does.
No way!Zonic Man

The bike we couldn't get it to work on was a LS ultimate! Too funny........

none. With a little adjusting (not much!) it should work fine.

I have not personally done it, but a good bike mechanic I know told me once he does it all the time with customers and no complaints.

Give it a try!
Go with a cheaper Veloce 9 speed cassetteMR_GRUMPY

It should work fine. You might have to adjust the rear changer every time you put a Shimano wheel back in.
