|From what I understand, the new 10 sp cassette is not as wide as the current 9sp. Thus to mount a 10sp cassette on a 9sp hub will require the use of a spacer on the hub body before the 10sp cassette slides on.
I believe that the 10sp hub will not take a 9sp cassette because it is being built to accept the 10sp cassette, and there will not be enough depth to properly seat a 9sp cassette.

|The latest issue of velo news has pictures of the new hub. The large diameter of the splined cassette body is larger than 9 speed (to deepen the spline), but the spline pattern is apparently the same.
10 speed cassettes will fit on older hubs but 8 or 9 speed cassettes will not fit on the new 10 speed hub due to the larger outer diameter of the casette body.
