POLL: Mavic Cosmos or Shimano R540s??The Preacher

I guess I've narrowed it down to these 2. I know people have recommended OP/ultegra before, but I want a little more zoot appeal. Talk about stringing out a decision on a $300 product! Anyway, what do ya think??

They are both comfortable wheelsets, good for a lot of miles. I think the 540 look better but if a spoke breaks its a long walk home

I finally got off the pot, and bought the Shimanos yesterday. Yeah, I wonder if I could buy a couple replacement spokes to carry with me? It would be an ugly road-fix, but better than walking! The mechanic at the LBS didn't seem to think that a spoke blowout would be quite so final, though. Do you really think the wheel would be unridable??

I had two spoke nipples pull thru the hub ona set of 540's a couple of weeks ago.

Yikes, that sucks! I read your other post about your ordeal with Shimano too, which also sucks. Could you ride the bike after the nipples blew through the hub?

I just ordered a couple of extra spokes and the Shimano nipple tools from my LBS today. Hopefully, I'll be covered in case of a backcountry emergency, but the LBS assured me that that would be very unlikely.

I rode my new wheels yesterday, and was purposely kind of hard on them... bunny hopping, etc. They held up perfectly, and so far I am very pleased. We shall see how they do over time.

What kind of wheels are you going to get now??

No could not ride, it bent the rim so that even with the brakes all the way open the wheel would not turn. Thanks to a cell phone I got a ride the other 11 miles back home.
Since I was switching my bike over to campy anyway, I purchased a set of Scirroco wheels. I have only gotten to ride on them twice but they feel really nice!
