i'm building up a bike for a freind, using mostly used campy daytona parts. some of the parts -- the cranks and shifters -- have what looks like tarnish and wear. the cranks in particular have a fair bit of light scratching. what can i do to polish these components? i have a slightly abrasive metal polish [all polishes are abrasive], but would that remove protective coating or anodization?

I suggest that you leave what you have alone. Use Pledge to clean it up and stop. The ano on those parts will require a lot of rub to remove and will look spotty later.
