Will Campy cassette work with Dura Ace?(6 posts)

Will Campy cassette work with Dura Ace?beecave

I have a set of Campy wheels that I'd like to use on a Dura Ace equipped bike. If I use a 9-speed Campy cassette and a SRAM chain, is there any reason it will not integrate smoothly into the drivetrain? Is there a way to use a Dura Ace cassette on the Campy freewheel?

Thanks!

You were OK until you said "integrate smoothly"... it will work, but not as good as a Dura-Ace on a Dura-Ace bike, or Campy on a Campy bike. But it will shift, but not perfectly... There are spacer kits to make it work right if you don't have any pinned cogs, but otherwise just use it.. it won't be exact, but it will work.

As for your second question, No. The spline patterns are totally different.

Thanks Russ!
When you say 'not perfectly', is that an an issue the cog spacing betwen Campy and Shimano 9-speed (if there a difference), or chain/cassete/derailleur mating? For example, would it shift any less precise than just using the SRAM chain on a Dura-Ace cassette?
Thanks again.

Shimano 9 speed cog spacing is 4.34mm and campy 9 is 4.55mm.it's close enough that a campy drivetrain will work with a shimano cassete/wheel and a shimano driverain will work with a campy 9 cassette/wheel

The above post is exactly correct...

It will shift, just not "perfectly" as you said in your first post. I have tried it and I wasn't satisfied with the performance, but I am a bit of perfectionist... but I have read other people saying that it works fine. It may be a little sloppy, but not bad enough for me to say it wont' work.

Campy offers a Shimano splined freehub for their wheels, so you could just replace the freehub and use your Shimano cassettes. It is offered with either a steel or Ti pawl carrier. The freehub with Ti saves you about 35 grams.
