Fastak & Contis(4 posts)

Fastak & Contistorquer
Jun 26, 2003 6:53 AM
Back in the day (the 80's) I used 3M Fastak (sp?) to glue tubulars, and never had any problems.

After almost a decade of riding clinchers only, I picked up some Conti Sprinters (price was too good to pass on), and as soon as I get around to building up a 9 speed rear wheel, I'll be good to go. In discussions of tubular glues here and on other forums, however, I read that some glues dissolve the base tape adhesive used by Continental.

Any experience (good or bad) using Fastak to glue Conti's?

I've never used the Fastak approach, but my understanding is that it is the prime offender in damaging Conti base tape. With Contis, I'd stick to traditional tubular glue.
If you sneeze on Conti's, the base tape comes off.....nmMR_GRUMPY

They say that Fastak has been reformulated over the years and now is more aggressive toward tubular base tapes. They also raise the question as to why you wouldn't use a glue formulated specifically for tubulars. Of course, that was a valid question even when Fastak was popular.
