Correct rim tape width for 700x23 wheels(8 posts)

Correct rim tape width for 700x23 wheelsSherpa

I recently ordered 3 rolls of rim tape and I think I bought the wrong size. These are for my Velomax Circuit Comps, and the tape is 11mm wide. The tape covers the spoke holes barely and I installed the tire and tube without problems. I'm just wondering if rim tapes ever meanders and if I'm putting myself at risk ....

Any thoughts?

I have always used the medium width Velox tape for all my road rims. Slightly wide, but for rims like the Mavic Open4CDs, it covers the whole eyelet. I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to tube chafing -- had a few go.

I'm not familiar enough with the Velomax line, so I don't know if these rims have eyeletted spoke holes. If they don't, I'd go with the wider tape. It's not that the tape creeps so much, but it does tend to deform into the spoke hole, which can draw it into the hole enough to expose the edge of the spoke hole (and any burrs that might be there).
I'd redo them.Spoke Wrench

17mm is what you need for a c rim. It completely covers the rim from flange to flange. If the narrow tape that you have now uncovers the slightest sliver of a spoke hole, your inner tube will cut itself on it. Then, if you're not alert to what's happening, there's a good chance you'll cut your spare tube too.

I am not stretching the truth at all you must use 17-18 mm wide to avoid unexpected flats. They always occur at the worst time, as you know.

I agree. I got into an argument with a kid at an LBSDave Hickey

The kid insisted that if it was a road bike, I needed 11mm wide tape. After I told him nicely that he was full of sh!t, I bought 17mm wide tape. 17mm will cause a lot less flats.

I wiggled my way into an argument yesterday over this issue- insisting I needed BLUE Velox - the kid said I needed GREEN (lettered tape). When I made it home, I noticed the green tape was the same width as my old blue tape... the 17mm... weird- I always thought they were color-coded. Must rather be set up for Bianchi owners ;)
