my LBS, having sold out of 9sp cranksets, claims the 10sp works fine, if not better.

The Campy website Q&A says it doesn't...

who to believe?

You need a different large chainring. Instead of asking your lbs ask Tim at branfordbike.com. He knows what he's talking about.

...pretty much goes with what Campy says, and alot of what Campy says is CYA, and not exactly true when it comes to practical usage. In all fairness,Shimano doesd the same.

Many people recomend a Dura Ace 9 speed chain for Campy 10 speed systems.

Yeah, but there can be issues depending on size of large cog and chainstay length.

According to Brandford bikes, the 10sp and 9sp cranksets differ only in the outer chainring. The 10sp chainring mounts closer to the inner chainring. The crankarms are identical.

when Campy moved from 9s to 10s, they spaced the inner chainrings something like .3mm closer - you can check this at Branford bike. I would bet that it will work just as well.

Buy the 10 speed, it works fine the only difference is the outer ring which is machined 0.4mm thinner at the point it fixes to the spider, the teeth are exactly the same . If you are worried, you could use 0.4mm spacers but my 10 speed Record triple works fine with 9 speed chain/rear mech.

As many of you suggested, it makes no difference. My LBS fitted the 10sp crankset, and after 50 odd miles, I can confirm there's no discernable shifting difference.

FWIW, intending absolutely no disrespect to Tim at Branford, I emailed him and he said, it wouldn't work unless I changed the chainring spacers to account for the 0.4mm difference....clearly the Campag site Q&A are going to be ultra-conservative - worth noting next time they say something can't be done...

Thanks all
