Are Zipp 404's any good?(5 posts)

Are Zipp 404's any good?rogue_CT1

I am looking for a rear racing wheel (I have a Lew Palmero front) and I am considering either a Zipp 404 or a Hed Alps wheel. Are the Zipps worth the money? Are they reliable and strong? How would you compare them to the Hed Alps? If I went with the Alps I would probably have them build me a set with 28 spokes instead of the usual 24.

They're good enough for Tyler Hamilton and CSC! And mine seem tough enough, though I have less than 500 miles on them thus far. Yes, they are expensive, though.

Tyler and co. don't have to worry about buying new wheels if they trash them. Supposedly Zipp improved manufacturing processes this year, but had some problems last year. I would stay away from 2002 models.

Had the 2002 Zipp and had some question about the rim warping after a heavy season of riding.

Sent them backand they rebuilt them for free with the new rims, front and rear, and guaranteed them for another year as if they were purchased in 2003.

Good service.
