SHIMANO 600 or Ultegra InfoOkiBama

What is the difference between Shimano 600 and Shimano Ultegra? Is 600 the old version of Ultegra? Does anyone know what year the name changed? Do they still make 600?

Thanks for any comments!

Some parts still have the 600 designation, like the new adjustible shifters for small hands and some pedals. My '98 5500 came with a Shimano 600 head set.

I have a 1984 bike (a Sekai) with Shimano 600 Ax cranks, calibers and hubs. It was a $200 bike

I have a 1991 bike (a Klein) with Shimano 600 Cranks, headset, seatpost and calibers but Ultegra hubs, but was 'advertised' as Ultegra. It was a $1400 bike.

Looks like Shimano 600 goes back as far as 1984. Looks like Shimano has smeared the difference between Ultegra and 600

I'm pretty sure that Shimano added the "ultegra" name to 600 in 1988, presumably in conjunction with a redesign. I have a couple of brochures and ads from 1988, and they mention the "new" 600 Ultegra group.
