So, my friend just bought his first road bike on ebay - an ancient, neon yellow Trek 1200. Unfortunately, when he took the thing into the shop, they discovered that the bolt on top of the stem was completely loose, and that the wedge shaped dealie was stuck way down in the fork.

Here's my question: how do I help him retreive that wedge shaped peice?

How stuck and how deep? Steel bike?

I assume the stem did come out OK with a little wiggling to break loose the rust that must have been holding it. The bolt that was in it (if not stripped) or a new one should be able to reach down into the fork tube and screw into the wayward wedge, which is very likely stuck in rust. That's your handle for yanking it out. If it doesn't come out easily, dribble a little Liquid Wrench (or other good penetrating oil) down in there and let it sit overnight, and try again.

Wedges usually do stick in place. Getting them loose usually requires first loosening the bolt, then giving it a brisk tap downward to pop the wedge loose.

Turn the fork upside down and whack it on a wood block. An old fork like this is likely open all the way through the steerer tube, so you should be able to get a stem bolt or long screwdriver through the bottom to push the wedge up. If it's frozen in place, soak in just about any oil, though Liquid Wrench will take things to the next level. To get it out from the top, go to your local hardware store and buy a number of metric bolts with the stem bolt thread. Saw the heads off the bolts, and then screw them together with nuts. This makes as long a "stem bolt" as you might need to put down the steerer tube, thread into the wedge, and pull it out.

That's some god advice Kerry, but here's a possibly easier way. Take the wheel off, turn bike upside down. Get a really large bolt 1/4" by like 9 or 10 inches long. Big sucker that will fit into the fork (you may have to take off the front brake, but that's simple) Spray in some Liquid Wrench, wait 30 minutes, put that bolt in and smack it with a hammer.

I have found that in a case like this, brute force works best. Don't try to pull the wedge out with the old bolt, but a bigger one in and drive it out from the bottom.

Just another way to do it, but be careful you don't damage things worse.
