Those little springs on the quick release skewerLC

Do I really need those little springs? I want to use a modern hub on a very old frame with a thin rear horizontal dropout and the axle extends past the dropouts. I can't tighten the quick release without removing the springs, and even then I had to search for a quick release with more space for the axle to fit into. I also do not want alter the hub since I want to be able to put it on my modern bike.
no dont need them-- they just center skewerstr8dum1

The springs should have nothing to do with the clamping mechanism of the QR. They just compress and sit into the recess of the QR nut. The QR only works correctly if the axle ends sit below the dropout faces, not even flush. A simple solution is to add the appropriate thickness washer to the outside face of each dropout on the QR. Both axle ends should be about 1mm below the washers so that the QR faces compress adequately against the washers when closed.
