For an upcoming trip in the mountains I have got a Campagnolo Veloce 9 speed triple with 30-42-52 chainrings. Is it OK to swap the 42 chainring for the 39 ring from my 9 speed Centaur chainset? Or is there some dire problem with chain pickup pins etc etc etc

Any views gratefully received...
Not designed for it.LC

Well it will sort of work, but your shifting will be worse so it is not worth it. It will be very difficult to get out of the 30. The front deraileur is also not designed for it and the chain will overshift from the 52 to the 39 landing on the 30 when not intended.

Not designed for it but it will work, though won't feel quite as crisp as having a pinned/ramped ring.

I use Centaur shifters with a 24/36/50 combo, nothing ramped, on a 110/74BCD crank. The nice thing about Campy is the semi-indexed/friction front, which shifts just fine, something you'd have more problems with on a Shimano STI triple.

I've used Campy 9 speed kit with old 8-speed unpinned Suntour cranksets without any problems. It's worth a try.
