|Speedplay problems. Any ideas?||peter1|

|Today I left a good bit of skin on the road when my right cleat pulled out of the pedal (Speedplay X2) and I went down. This is the second time it's happened in the year I've owned the pedals. (The first time I was able to keep the rubber side down). |
What has happened both times is that the top of the U-shaped metal spring has lodged in the "open" position, thus preventing a secure clamp.
My setup is DMT shoes with a Time sole insert, and snap-shims to keep the Speedplay cleat level. The cleats are in pretty good shape (I used the coffee shop caps as much as possible) and there doesn't seem to be a any nicks in the interface.
What can I do to make sure the spring closes securely? I think I may either have over-tightened the cleat to the pedal, making the spring lodge against the sole -- or possibly it is that the shims don't fit perfectly, thus allowing the cleat to flex a bit.
Any ideas? My epidermis (or what's left of it) would appreciate it!

|When you have the cleat on the shoe sole, there should be zero flexing as you tighten the bolts. If there is any flexing, you run the risk of distorting the cleat and having the thing not work. Another possibility is to shoot some dry lube in there to insure that things work smoothly - perhaps the only good application for White Lightning. At any rate, the smart money is on an imperfect match between shoe and cleat.|

|I had a simular experience with Speedplay pedals. On certain shoes if I overtighten the mounting screws, it would allow the spring lock not go fully go back into position. Some dry lube on the cleat and backing off about a quarter of a turn on each of the mounting screws fixed the problem.|

Been riding with Speedplay pedals for approx 4 years now. Never had a problem with them.You are better off keeping them well greased (cleats) I use them with time shoes (with the base plate)
