Hello all. I just pulled the trigger on a new Kestrel EMS pro bar and Ritchey WCS stem and have a couple questions.

First, is there anything special I should be doing when clamping the sti shifters and stem plate to the bars?

Second, I ordered the 73 degree stem by mistake. Would it be the same thing as the 84 degree if I just took off a 10mm spacer (to compensate for the rise)?

Thanks in advance

You goofed on the stem. A 73 degree stem has no rise at all. It will be about 1.3cm lower than an 84 degree. You would have to add spacers, not remove them.

If you had some other brand of stem on the bike, you may need to adjust the number of spacers to insure that the steering tube is 2-3mm below the top of the stem. Alternately, a 5mm spacer can be placed on top of the stem, but the steering tube must always be at least 1mm below the top cap. Otherwise, the top cap will not tighten the stem against the headset.

Nothing special about mounting the stem or bars, just tighten the bolts uniformly and torque to spec. The bar clamp bolts don't require a lot of torque to hold the bars adequately.
THANKS FOR CLEARING IT UP FOR ME! (NM)bicycle268
