Chatter on rear cogset?ErikofEdmonds

Hi - I have 2000 miles on my '02 Bianchi Eros, and lately I've noticed some chain/cogset chatter when I'm in the middle gears. It stops when I shift up to an easier (and down to a lower) gear, and doesn't matter which front chainring I'm in. I inspected the rear cogset for debris and didn't find any. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is is time for a new chain? Thanks, Erik

Fair chance that it is just a gear adjustment.

A little fiddling with the rear der barrel adjuster ought to take care of this. Make small adjustments, I usually do 1/8 to a 1/4 turn. If this doesn't help could be that you have the cog spacers set up wrong. I accidentally reassembled my Campy 10sp cassette wrong once. It has a "wide" spacer intended to come immediately after the alloy carrier body that holds the largest 3 cogs. I had all sorts of problems from this. Indexing was always off on several gears, and it rubbed causing a "shudder" when in the 3rd and 4th largest cogs. After a couple rides took it all apart again and saw what I'd done. Oops! No harm though, works fine.
