Has anyone used/heard of Power Cranks? They seem like a good idea but I could also see how they might just be frustrating and a waste of time and money. Any thoughts?

A lot of people on various triathlon boards swear by them (and a few swear AT them). The Gordo forum has a lot of traffic dedicated to them (http://www.coachgordo.com/cgi-bin/config.pl), Slowtwitch seems to have a monthly heated debate about them (http://www.slowtwitch.com/cgi-bin/gforum.cgi?forum=1), and there's a few users on the Tri-Newbies Online forum (http://www.trinewbies.com/phorum/forum-view.asp?forumid=3). I have no personal experience with them, but what I've gathered form the conversations is that they force oyu to develop a REAL pedalling circle, and will develop the hip flexors. While it may not increase your cycling speed, Frank Day has pretty well documented improvements in running speed coming off the bike.

Decided it was a waste of money.I think Ill just put miles in and Ill be stong.I was thinking they would be good on the indoor trainer to keep me from getting board but decided aginst it in the long run.I think these cranks would help a runner(Triathlete)more than me.

The basic concept for these was patented in the 1890s. Maybe they're a great thing, and if so they will catch on and everyone will be using them. Alternatively, if they are just another placebo-based fad, they will disappear in a year or so and susceptible individuals will be on to the next great thing. My advice would be to sit on your money and watch what happens over the next year or so. I'm betting they will be off the "A" list before that time elapses.

I have seen and test riden a pair... I wouldn't go so far as to call them a gimmick, but I didn't get off the bike wanting a pair either.

The Power Cranks make you pedal independent circles with each leg. It doesn't matter what your dominate leg is doing, it's your non-dominate leg that matters with these. Both sides of the crank spin independent of the other side. They will definatly improve your form. I don't really think they would make me any faster, just smoother.
