I have an Ultegra triple crank (53x42x30) with Ultegra front derailer, and would like to reduce the size of the underdrive. Has anyone tried using a 28, 26 or 24 with a 42T in the middle? I changed from using a mountain bike settup due to the undersized big ring. Now I find we can't get up the really steep hills with the 30 x 34 gear combination (yes, still running mountain bike cassette).

Appreciate any input!!!
I'd give it a try.Spoke Wrench

It seems like I've read on Tandem & Hobbs that someone has done that, but I think that some people's standards for "works perfectly" might not be as high as mine. I'd imagine that the shift from the grannie to the middle ring will be degraded a bit, but that's not a shift that you make all that often. Besides, by then you'll be coasting downhill so just finesse it till it goes in. I wouldn't worry about chain slack bacause you'd never use your grannie with an 11 or 13 rear cog. Worst case is you'll hate it and you can always switch back. If that's what you think you need, for the price of a chainring, I'd go for it.
