Simano Deore XT/Mega XT ??yellowspox

I'm running 9-spd Ultegra components on my two ring setup but may need some help with a few hilly rides this spring. An interesting previous post/reply suggested switching to an XT rear derailleur, XT 12-32 or 34 cassette and a slightly longer chain vs my original idea of just switching to a 12-27 cassette. As I started checking out derailleurs, I noticed XT and XT Mega. What's the difference? Is there a short vs long cage version and would a long cage version be required for this setup?

I suspect that "XT Mega" is meant to mean the current "Mega 9" compatible XT line.
I'd go long cage becausejiggs

with the 53 T large chain ring and whatever med/large cog, down to 39T small ring and 13/15T cog you have a large difference in the lenth of your chain so a longer cage can accept a bigger difference. Hope this makes sense.
I have the same setup.....davet

Ultegra double and XT rear der and cassette, and the XT der is the 'Mega' or long cage. You WILL need the long cage with the large chainrings and cassette.

Thanks for the replies. The Shimano tech page was terrific and I'll go with the long cage. Sounds like a project to do as soon as I get back from my Cajun country ride at the end of the month. I could never fish without a dozen tackle boxes and 50 to 75 rods on the trip so I guess cycling is no different. LOL
Yeah, fishing & biking, two big money pits!davet
