I have a 105 9 speed hub/wheel and a set of 8 speed STI shifters. I understand that the hubs will accept 8 speed cassettes but I don't know if you need any spacer or other piece when mounting this cassette. Anyone know?

Also, can I use a 9 speed chain? Thanks,

Guy

There can be compatability issues with 8/9 speed conversions. Someone posted on this the other day, in fact. If you put a 9 speed cassette on an 8 speed body, it will genreally fit fine unless the cassette has an 11-tooth small cog. In that case, there will be play and you'll need a spacer. Not sure why. Cassette with a 12-tooth cog is apparently fine.

In your case, with an 8 speed cassette on a 9 speed body, I do not know if there are any similar little quirks.
9 to 8 will work fine. The 11t problem is...TFerguson

when trying to put a 11t on a non-hyperglide freehub body. On an HG, the splines do not go all the way to the outside edge of the freehub body. This lets the smaller diameter 11t cog fit. Solution: I'm using a non-HG Ultegra where I just filed down the ends of the splines and it works fine.
