Or did the switch to 9-speeds come after it became Ultegra?

600 was also rerfered to as Ultegra, but 600 STI levers were only 8 speed, and their model numbers were the 64xx serirs.
No, but you can buy Ultegra 9 speed upgrade "kits"Fez

to upgrade the 600 Ultegra 8 speed group. It included new shifters, rear deraill, 9 speed cassette and 9 speed chain.

Not cheap and not pretty, but it is 9 speed when you're done.

The rear derailer isn't required unless the 8 speed group was Dura Ace.

Why is that? Anything functionally different to necessitate the rear derail if DA?

BTW Ultegra and 105 upgrade kits are sold with a rear derail.

Yeah,7 and 8 speed shimano RD other than DA will work with 9 speed shifters.Pre 9 speed DA shifters and RD had uique cable pull/Derailer throw ratios and had to be used togerther.....the 9 speed rear derailers hav an 11 tooth upper jockey wheel, that makes them different but not a requrement.Shimano makes more mone yselling stuff you don't need.
Not entirely true...indymac

according to this compatibility chart?

OK, so why don't youRusty Coggs

...tell me exactly what YOUR point is,because that chart and it's language is a bit suspect in places.....Actually, a pre 9 speed DA RD does work with any shimano 9 speed shifter to shift an 8 speed shimano cassette perfectly.
My point?indymac

Just passing on some info. that I had run across that I thought might be useful.

I brought it up because this didn't seem to jive...

'Yeah,7 and 8 speed shimano RD other than DA will work with 9 speed shifters'

Maybe I misunderstood...

I have a set of trashed 9 speed Ultegra shifters that work (sometimes). I'm looking for cheap replacements - this is not my primary bike and it does not see tons of miles. I was checking for cheap parts on eBay and was wondering if I should bothering searching for 600 parts or not. From my little bit of looking even 105 STIs are going for more than I want to spend.

The old 600 Ultegra never made it to 9 speed.

But used parts really vary widely in price and in condition.

I wouldn't be surprised if 9 speed DA, Ultegra, 105 and Tiagra shifters overlapped in price in the used market. Condition and seller's motivation to get rid of them can really vary the price of the shifters.
