|Ultegra 9-spd crankset OK with 8-spd 105 drivetrain?||killermustard|

|I have a 97 Cannondale CAAD 3 with the 8-speed 105 gruppo. I figure that the best performance upgrade at this point would be the stiffer Ultegra crankset/BB.
The problem is that the Ultegra crankset is a 9-speed, so I assume it wouldn't be compatible with the 8-speed chain. If I replace the Ultegra's inner chainring with the inner chainring from my existing 105 8-speed crankset, would it work? Any other suggestions?

|Since the 9-speed chain is too narrow for the 8-speed setup, wouldn't you also have to replace the big ring?
It seems kinda pointless to me to buy a new Ultegra cranks and then replace the new chainring with your old ones.
You've got a good frame. A nine speed cassette will work on the back, but you'll have to buy new 9-speed shifters. The derailleurs can probably be made to work, but I've never tried that move.
BTW, a LBS manager told me that Shimano was going to 10 speeds in 2004. Rumors are flying.
