Another Polar Query - Help.DannyBoy

I've got another Polar query. I need a monitor that will allow me to capture and upload data to my pc. I've been looking at Polar S610 and 710's simply because they have the 'allegedly' more reliable infrared link.

Does anyone have experience of using the cheaper models with the sonic link?

As it goes the sonic link is better as it'll work with the sound card on my work pc. If I go down the infrared route it causes my IT manager untold grief and I have to use a colleagues laptop, which has an infrared port.

Incidentally here's a bit of text from Mr IT himself.

"It does not suprise me that the Sonic link is dodgy - I would have guessed that would be the case. I am sure you can buy a small adaptor to go on your PC to give Infrared but I can't find one at the moment. Will keep looking but all laptops have one, including the pool laptops."

Any comment/advice would be appreciated.

the 710 only works with the builtin infrared port with certain operating systems I believe...

the 720 may be better about that...

polar sells a USB IR interface that will solve your problems..

the software that comes with teh 710/720 is 1000% better than that which comes with the 510 (i don't know anything about the 610)

I never had a problem with the sonic link transfer on my Polar Coach, it is always reliable. Now, on the other hand there is my new S710 with USB infrared interface which has NEVER worked!!! I've had it since November and it simply will not transfer data. Polar said it was because I installed the USB interface prior to installing the software but I don't think that is the problem since I bought the interface 2 weeks AFTER installing the software!!

The only difference between the S710 & 720 is the outside face plate. The 720 is metal and the 710 is plastic.

The S710 is supposed to work with the built in infrared port of Windows 95 computers but I would guess that there are not many of them out there anymore.

In retrospect, I wish I had never bought the S710, mine just doesn't work. Since I do have it I can honestly say that the temp and altitude features are nice to have. I have never installed the speed sensor since I have a good wireless computer.
