is my BB dead?bikeape

how do you know when it's time to overhaul the BB or just replace?
i'm riding 300 miles/week at a high cadence and my bike's starting to feel unresponsive even though my legs are fresh and still test well on the stationary trainer. so my guess is the BB.
any ideas??

Pull the chain off the chainrings and spin the pedals.. is it smooth? If not, it may be that time. Is your BB a cartridge or free ball bearing BB? If it's a cart, just replace it. If it's old style, you can overhaul and replace just the balls.

In order for your BB to be so far gone that you're slowing down because of it, you could feel the heat generated with your hand on the frame at the BB. Shift the chain off the small ring and turn the crank slowly with a light touch. If you feel significant resistance, play, or roughness, it's (past!!!) time for overhaul or replacement if it is a cartridge unit. Otherwise, it is the more likely conclusion that you are plateaued or overtrained.
