Quill to Threadless adapter? Work OK?(4 posts)

Quill to Threadless adapter? Work OK?Xoc

Hey all,

I just picked up my first roadbike through the classifieds, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a longer stem. The bike has a quill stem setup, and I've noticed that they are somewhat hard to find. I'm considering using one of the quill to threadless adapters so I have a better selection of stems.

Has anyone used one of these, good? bad? ugly?
They work. Not real pretty. I put quill back on. (nm)TFerguson

As TFerg said, they look a little odd but they work just fine. In my case my quill stem was old and heavy. The adapter with a threadless-type stem is lighter than the original quill. But the thing is a little odd looking. Thank goodness I'm not a slave to fashion - as my riding buddies can testify.

I'm looking at doing the same thing on a Bianchi. If it works like I think it should, the new setup will be stiffer and same weight or a bit lighter. You also get the benefit of a removable face plate. Cheapest place I can find one is here (never bought from them before):

elsewhere is pretty much $25 with shipping, ebay is an even bigger rip off. I also have a couple quill stems in the 125/130 mm range that I'd sell for a couple bucks + shipping, if you know exactly what size you need. Good luck.
