I need to get a wheelset for my old Cannondale/Shimano 600 bike so that I can have a "guest" bike. Any thoughts as to really inexpensive stuff that works? house brands etc.?

If you live near a larger city (sf bay area) you might try craigslist.com and look under bicycle postings.I also had a little luck a a local flea market.

I have actually had great luck buying (machine built) wheels from Nashbar. I put on the rim tape myself since it only takes a few minutes, I ride them for a few weeks, and then take them to my LBS to have them trued.

I actually purchase the Sun Assault set last year when they came with Shimano 105 hubs. They have been great and I use them for weekend rides and centuries.

If you want really cheap, eBay is the way to go.
