Alright, need HOT DEAL on road bikeSablotny

Shopping for a friend who can plunk down $1200. Rules are: no house brands like Scattante or Douglas. Strong, muscular 190 pound rider, so no carbon fiber. Either a great frame on sale with a 105 setup or a passable frame with Ultegra. If anybody knows of a great deal on a frame or build, please post. So far I've found the Litespeed Vela alum/105 for $1600 (whoops) and the K2 Mod 105 for $1200. Thanks for any help.

Fuji's in steel or alum, and 105 or Ultegra, all under $1200.

Not quite sure why you would think that CF is no good for big strong guys. But with a $1200 budget that's a moot point anyway.

that's the site I couldn't remember. The Fuji Team looks great. No slam to carbon fiber in general, but from my experience riding Looks and Kestrels they just flex too much when hammering & descending at speed. I'm 185 pounds of fit cyclist, and my friend is even heavier- a muscled personal trainer. On the opposite side of things, many people find aluminum too stiff and jarring, but it works well for me.
Not to beat the "buy used" drum too loudlyjtolleson

but if he knows what he wants geometry-wise, you can get a very nice bike indeed from the advertisements on this site for $1200. Ti or high-end al plus Ultegra can absolutely be had at that price point.
Good call- I'll check it outSablotny

I wouldn't rule out "house brands" with a blanket statement. Many brand name frames are contract built by the same factorys. In fact, most if not all Taiwan built frames are high quality so not to worry. And regarding the Scattante frames in particular, they look quite nicely built to me - should add that I'm quite particular about quality since I'm a quality engineer by trade.

Some cheap bike options should include:

NOW is the time to troll the LBS's. It's clearance time...
I'm looking myself. I'm looking at a 2001 Lemond Zurich for
1200.00 ! Look around, you'll find some great deals. Also ask them to check inventory... You can probably cut a good deal...
