Flight Deck Gear Sensor Issues(4 posts)

Flight Deck Gear Sensor Issueshfc

I have the 6500 on Dura Ace shifters. I recently bought the bike used and the gear readout doesn't work. It constantly shows the gear on the smallest chainring and cog. It also shows a 3 ring crankset even though I keep programming it for double chainring. Occasionally while I'm riding the display will show a gear change and once it even showed the right gear, but it usually just reverts back to the screwed up one. I don't really mind the display being wrong, but it screws up the cadence count too. I also think it's odd that both chainring and cog readouts are wrong. Anyone had an experience like this? Are the sensors bad and if so can they be replaced? Thanks to all for the input.

I have the newer version, but try puting a shim under the tab on the shifter. The small clear stickers come with the unit when it is new. You can try your LBS for some extra stickers.

A Shimano service rep also reccommended using a small piece of bar tape in lieu of the plastic shims that came with my 6501 unit;the idea is to get a tighter contact between the ribbon contacts and the display contact; you might want to call them for further advice--like maybe needing to clean the contact areas and how if they've been mis-reading for awhile.

The 6500 seems to display 3 rings and 9 cogs regardless of programming - I programmed 8 cogs but it continues to display 9 cogs.
