choosing handlebar width(4 posts)

choosing handlebar widthtimwat

Is there a method to choosing the correct width handlebar? I'm about to switch to an ergo type bar and noticed my bars are much wider than some of my friends bikes(mine are 44cm). I guess I'm about average size(5'11" 180lbs)

Thanks in advance,
Tim

I do not know if there is an "exact" method one should absolutely follow, but a general fitting technique is to measure the distance between the shoulders from the front. Measure from the bony protrusions at the top of the shoulder (the Acromion processes), and you will get a good starting value for a bar sized c-c. My wife, who has her degree in exercise physiology, strongly believes you need to measure from the front, because from the back you have to deal with more bulk and you can get a higher value.

I reckon you get the widest available - I use 46's and love em but I'm a big bugger too! Wider bars - more places to put your hands.
