Mavic Cosmic Elite vs Open Pro/Ultegra(5 posts)

Mavic Cosmic Elite vs Open Pro/Ultegracoaster
Jan 27, 2003 12:54 PM
I have two wheel options in the build kit my shop is offering: Cosmic Elites or Open Pro on Ulterga hubs. Which of these is the better option for an all-around race bike? I'm about 165 lbs and tend to be more of a power rider. I know there are better wheels out there, but my budget is small! Thanks for the advice.

are the O/P's handbuilt? if so go that route.

I have both - they are great. The Elites are just as good as the K's at twice the price - same bearings, and probably tougher. The OPs are nice too, and tough if they are well-built.

If you trust the builder, it's down to classic style v modern.

I am 6'6" 222 pound power rider and love my Elites. They are the only wheel I have ever owned that did not come untrue (that is so far). The last set of OPs I owned (built by Colorado Cyclist) were untrue with in 150 miles. On the Elites, I did have a few spokes turn as the nipples set in the rear non-drive side, but my LBS fixed that in a snap. I am glad I followed my LBS suggestion and opted for the Elites.

so if you are weight or money conscious
Elites will cost over a 100 bucks more and are 200 grams (quarter pound) heavier. Most of this weight is in the aero rim which vikingbiker says is quite durable (which they are). I run O/P's on road and cross, am 6'5" 230+ and only need to true my cx's if I kick out sideways on a bunny hop. so go with either, ya can't lose. If you like the 'traditional" go O/P's if you like the "modern" go cosmic. I actually have some of both. Have Ksyriums as well.
