DuraAce chain wear(5 posts)

DuraAce chain weardeHonc

Folks - I have 3 month old DA groupset - LBS has confimed my chain has stretched 3mm, they tell me 5mm is fully worn out. The bike has done about 3200km. Should I get a new chain now so as to preserve my DA cassette or can I get another 1000-1500km from my original chain without damage to my cluster?

Thanks for any advice.

Dan

Hi Dan, Waiting to 5 mm seems as if you would not only needed to replace the cassette but the chainrings also. I get about 2000 miles out of a Dura Ace chain and I replace it when I have about 1/16 of an inch wear. Replace it now and get some more life out of your cassette and chainrings.
It may be too late for the cassette n/mcurlybike

You need more chain lube in the correct locations. Chain wear is caused by lack of lubrication at the pin/bushing interface. Without the correct amount of lube, you get metal to metal contact. Dirty lube is almost as bad as no lube.
Keep your chain lubed and clean and get a Park tool to measure chain life.
Got new chain - cassette/chainrings fine! (nm)deHonc
