Mavic Open Pro Vs. Mavic CXP 21Damn
Jan 21, 2003 2:47 PM
I'm looking at buying a new wheelset. Performance has a set of Shimano 105/ Mavic Open Pro for $189.98. Nashbar has a set of Shimano 105/ Mavic CXP 21 for $169.95. Is there any big difference between the two types of rims?
I'd pop for the Open Pros.Spoke Wrench

The CXP 21 is a basic OEM rim. OK, but nothing special. The Open Pro is the quality standard that all other rims are compared to.

at that price difference go for the Open Pros. Opens have eyelets on each hole, a better breaking surface and are ligther.
Easy choicevelocity

As other posters have noted, it's an easy choice. Get the Open Pros.

You didn't say how much you weigh but plenty of posts in the last year about spoke breakage on CXP21s. I have no personal experience with them, but the OP's are tried and true. Wheels are no place to guess, IMO.

look at this Ultegra/OpenPro wheelset:

and here:

For $20.00 more you get a much better hubset with the best rims.

I went with Ultegra/Open Pro's from Excel Sports for $195. I actualy tried to get the 105/open pro's from performance because I get points for money off future purchases but they had the wheels on back order. Their loss for being out of stock. That seems to be a reoccurring problem with performance. Guess in the end it helped me get a better wheelset.
Thanks for all the replys...went with ultegra/open propa rider

Sorry for late post, but you made a good choose. I have the cpx21 on my one front wheel with a cannondale hub. They break at the eyelets and are a pain in the butt to get tires on. I use the wheel as a winter wheel and now see why I hate the rim.

I found last year I could got a close out on cpx-21 28 spoke rim for under $10. That tells you how cheap they really are made compared to the open pro rim.
