quick question...

Can an 8sp cassette (shimano) go on a 7sp freewheel OR do I either have to get a new hub OR do I need to get a new freewheel body...

I thought 8 and 9 were same, and are compatible... or that 7 and 8 are compatible... I just dont remember or know where to look. Can you guys help?

The 7 speed free hub body is shorter and won't accomodate an 8 or 9 speed cassette. You would need a new freehub body.

The 8/9 speed cassettes fit on the same hub body. 7 speed is not compatable -- the hub is actually more narrow, so you cannot interchange 7 speed wheels with the 8/9 speed wheels. So:

1. Yes, you need a new hub
2. You also probably need a new bike. If the bike is steel, the rear triangle can spread apart for a 8/9 speed hub. On the other hand, you can just jam it on by hand. I did this once with a Cannondale I had (born a 7-speed). The wheel did not center perfectly, but it worked OK. After a few years, the rear drop-out broke and I pitched it.
You can put 8 of a 9 on a 7 hub...zmarke
