|I have a fork that needs about 1 inch more thread to work on my bike(bottom side). Can thise be done and does anyone know a fair cost?|

|Yes it can, Park makes a tool to cut threads in a fork. Take it to your LBS and he should do it for $10 to $20.|

|I'd do a couple of additional threads for that price, but a whole inch - no way. Cutting that many threads with a hand die would require at least 1/2 hour of real physical work.
The thing you have to be careful of with fork threading is that's the kind of project that doesn't come up very often. Low ball pricing is usually the hallmark of a guy who hasn't done it before.

|I just recently had an old Tange cromo fork threaded an inch or maybe a little more for $15. It wasn't chromed and was a simple procedure, once the shop located the die. IMO I'd have it rethreaded versus using shims on top of the lock nut, if only because it would look cleaner.

|You could always put an inch of spacers under the locknut. Use aluminum except for the top keyed washer. It would be like an extended head tube.|

|A lot of good advice here. I got a killer deal on a carbon fork that was a tad too long and had this done. The guy screwed up a lot of the threads (just messy) but it turned out OK in the end. Still, make sure you find the best shop you can to do it. I was in a hurry and suffered a little as a result, but it's held very well.
I think Mr. Grouchy's idea won't work, because the race of the headset needs to be threaded onto the steerer.
I do use a 1cm 1" spacer between the upper race and the locknut of my Ultegra headset (and keep my stem lower) but you won't be able to keep adjustment very well if the upper race is just "sitting" there, IMO/YMMV,etc.

|you won't be able to screw the top race down far enough to set the bearing pre-load. The only solution is to add threads or to get a shorter fork.
If the fork is a little too long, you can put spacers between the upper race and the lock nut to keep the lock nut from bottoming out against the steer tube before it's tight.
