|I have a new Colnago and it came with the Colnago headset cap that seems to be designed for the Colnago stem, i.e. it doesn't fit correctly on my non-Colnago stem. I would like to replace this cap with the Record version...is it possible to purchase just the headset cap?|

|...haven't seen one, anyway. Come to think, I have never seen a Shimano one either. I thought, they usually come with the forks spec'ed, not with the component group.|

|It comes with the record headset, and the cap is a very trick all carbon fiber disk with an aluminum bolt. The Colnago stem is a rebadged 1 1/8 ITM Millenium stem with 2 shims, The normal shim can be used with any top cap, but the second shim is excentric so that the 80 degree stem becomes a 90 degree stem and this shim must be used with the special excentric cap.|

|You will need both the top cap and the special top cap bolt if you want campy record. The campy top cap bolt doesn't work real well with carbon fiber steering tubes, if you have one.
The record top cap has a larger than normal bolt hole and an aluminum bolt with an enlarged, unthreaded diameter near the top. The expanding plug required for carbon fiber steering tubes must be placed about 1cm below the top of the steering tube to use this bolt. In this position, the expanding plug does not provide optimum support against stem clamping pressure.
That said, I've been using this setup for several years with no problems, but I'm real careful to position the expanding plug as high as possible in the steering tube and I don't tighten the upper steering tube clamp bolt on the stem as tight as the lower one.

|As with nearly all Campag stuff, the top cap, bolt and star fangled thing are avaiable together as a spare part.
Condor Cycles in London sells them for about £9, I'm sure you could get them at your local Campag stockist.
Having said that I don't think you should use a star fangled thing with carbon steerers.

|I was shopping for the same Campy Record carbon top cap and bolt last summer and found them stocked at La Bicicletta in Vancouver. Unfortunately it costed $15 CDN, so I decided that I didn't need the carbon top cap look that badly.|

|cap but forgot. He is going to mail it and also said that the Record cap fits into the special expander that Colnago makes for their carbon forks, so all should be good.
Thanks for the responses!
