Does anyone know what the small tube is that comes with STI shifters? It looks like a small thermometer with an "H" & an "L". Where does it mount and what is to gain?

Install it "in-line" with your rear derailleur cable a few inches from the shifter (so you can see it while your riding).

It's simply a visual indicator that tells you which cog is currently being used on your cassette.

When I was using a 12-27 cassette with very marginal chain length, I thought it helped to avoid a bad combination of big big. It can't hurt anything, so why not use it?
